Compass set-up

Before the compass can be used to draw circles, it’s important to have it set up correctly.


Step 1

Make sure the compass is completely closed.

Step 2

Loosen the ‘Adjusting Nut’.

Step 3

Insert the pencil into the ‘Holder’.

Step 4

Tighten the ‘Adjusting Nut‘.

Correct answer: Level with the compass point

If the pencil is not level with the compass tip, it will be point towards the paper at a too wide angle. This will make small circles harder to draw. However, sometimes when we want to make a circle bigger than our compass can normally make, we can move the pencil beyond the point of the compass.
